Town Hall Station Documentation Methodology

For EXP2, my installation in the Town Hall Station was to set up green and red paths which takes the player around the station, starting from the George Street side to the other end of the station which is the QVB side. The paths were set up carefully which leads them throught specific levels of the station and at certain checkpoints, making the player decide which path to choose [green or red]. I wanted to see how players would react to these colours for in cases of navigation, green generally would mean "to advance" or giving the person permission to proceed. Red on the other hand should be defined as "to stop" when it is put together with the colour green. So installing paths of these two colours on symmetrical sides of the station, I observed the player's decisions on which path they would choose to reach the other side [e.g: Would they pick green as their first choice to go further into the station?].

The textures used for the station was slightly altered to make it appear more simple so that it wouldn't disrupt the navigation around the structure. Although this experiment was only tested on four people, it still gave a clear result showing a 60%-100% chance that people would pick GREEN during the navigation between the 5 checkpoints whilst on the other hand, there was only a 40%-60% chance they would pick RED. The results might not be statistically accurate because of the limited amount of people experimented on and because of situations where people are prone to colours of their own liking. However, it still gave a clear idea of which would be the most suitable colour for installations in public places like the Town Hall Station.

Research Assignment - Comparing Workflows

My aim for the research assignment was to find out which would be the fastest way to model up something which will be used for my final Town Hall Station installation so the two would end up having some sort of link together. That is, using Google SketchUp then importing into Sandbox2 Editor OR with Solidworks, bringing into 3DS Max and finally importing into the Editor.

Both ways proved to have their own pros and cons but Google SketchUp proved to be the fastest when modelling my installation for the station. In desperate situations when time is limited and something goes wrong in the last minute, the results for this experiment would help users decide which way is more preferable.

Methodology taken for this research:

1. Creating a 100cmx25cmx5cm rectangular prism and using it to model in both SketchUp and SolidWorks.

2. Recording the steps required to completely bring object into Sandbox2 Editor successfully.

3. Timing the whole process of both workflows and compare results.

Guest Lecture reflection

Stuart Bull gave a very informative talk on how more and more different and innovative programs are helping the architectural field in many ways in terms of high degree of accuracy, efficiency and becoming more user friendly making work alot easier and less time consuming. He also talked about the company's jobs around the world such as the new Hong Kong International Airport and works from other countries, how these new technology helped them complete the projects successfully.

Research Question

Which workflow would be the fastest in terms of modelling and importing into Crysis Sandbox2 Editor?

I wanted to determine which would be fastest to complete and be more convenient from the point of modelling an object and importing into the editor. In situations where time is limited or if something happens at the very last minute, we would want to know which one would be fastest to help solve specific problems.
